Iran and the Persian people together have a long and rich history with their culture, religions and mythology. In this article I will discuss many different aspects of their mythology, and perhaps dabble in some religion to explain how the ways of old affect current culture and traditions. This is a very broad topic so I will focus on certain festivals and prominent ceremonies. I will start with some wedding traditions left over from a time when witchcraft was a serious issue and a person had to be wary of falling pray to a spell, and the many different symbols regarding the bride and groom. Then I will go into the winter solstice and the festival surrounding it. After that I will finish off with the Persian new years and its festival. Persian culture is rich and interesting, and I believe it deserves more attention in western countries. Marji, from the novel Persepolis, has lived many of these and it will provide an interesting window into another part of her life.
